RIR (Reps in Reserve) and RPE (Rating of Perceived Exertion) are two of the most powerful tools in modern strength training. They allow you to quantify training intensity with precision and dynamically adjust your working weights to daily recovery fluctuations (autoregulation).


🎯 What Do RIR and RPE Mean?

1. RIR (Reps in Reserve)

RIR measures how many additional reps you could have performed with clean technique before hitting absolute muscular failure.

  • RIR 0: Absolute limit. Zero additional reps possible without form breakdown.
  • RIR 1: You stopped when you had 1 rep left in the tank.
  • RIR 2: You stopped when you could have completed 2 more reps.
  • RIR 3: Moderate intensity; 3 reps remained before failure.

2. RPE (Rating of Perceived Exertion)

Adapted for resistance training by renowned powerlifting coach Mike Tuchscherer (originating from Dr. Gunnar Borg’s exertion scale), RPE is a 1-to-10 numerical scale reflecting your subjective exertion.

In practical gym application, RPE and RIR are two sides of the same coin:

🔬 What Does Science Say About Training to Failure (RIR 0)?

For decades, old-school bro-science claimed that “muscles only grow on the reps that hurt until failure.” However, modern sports science (such as meta-analyses by Dr. Brad Schoenfeld and colleagues) reveals a clearer picture:

  1. Hypertrophy is virtually identical between RIR 0 and RIR 1-2: High-threshold motor units are already fully recruited on the reps preceding failure.
  2. Failure causes disproportionate neuromuscular fatigue: Grinding to true failure on heavy squats causes central nervous system exhaustion and muscle damage that takes up to 72 hours to recover from, compromising subsequent sets and workouts.
  3. Elevated injury risk: Technical breakdown on multi-joint barbell movements near failure drastically spikes spinal and joint strain.

Golden Rule: Keep your heavy compound lifts at RIR 1 to RIR 2. Reserve RIR 0 (failure) strictly for the final set of safer isolation movements on machines or cables (such as leg extensions, lateral raises, or biceps curls).
